🏫 Our History
🗓️ Founded: De Chaumes Elementary opened its doors in 1956
🏷️ Name Origin
The school is named after the De Chaumes family, early community leaders who generously donated land for educational purposes. More about the name’s origin can be found via the Houston ISD historical archive: HISD School Histories.
🌆 Serving Our Community
Located in the heart of the Northside / Homestead North neighborhood (ZIP 77076) of Houston, De Chaumes has long served a culturally rich, predominantly Hispanic and immigrant community. Many of our families face economic challenges, yet they bring incredible resilience, strong values, and a deep commitment to their children’s education.
🎓 Today’s Campus
We currently welcome around 735 students from Pre‑K through 5th grade, supported by approximately 47 dedicated teachers—an average of over nine years of experience—maintaining a student‑teacher ratio of about 16:1.
🏫 Historic Redevelopment
De Chaumes Elementary opened as part of Houston ISD’s historic $805 million Bond Construction Campaign approved in 2007, which funded 15 entirely new campuses and major renovations across the district. The school welcomed its first students into its modern, LEED‑designed facility in fall 2012, featuring open spaces, state-of-the-art technology, and capacity for about 750 students from Pre‑K through 5th grade. Serving primarily under‑resourced families (with over 95 % qualifying for free/reduced lunch and nearly 98 % of students identifying as Black, Latino, Native American, or Asian) as a Title I campus, De Chaumes has grown into a vibrant, family‑friendly school within the community
